Ted Baker is one of our favourite brands here at Messina Hembry. Both their old collections and new are designed to stand the test of the time in their aesthetic and their durable quality. We have a selection of vintage Ted Baker clothing available suitable for both the end of the summer and coming into the fresh crispness of Autumn.

We wanted to learn a little more about Ted Baker: the history, the founder and what it’s up to now and here is what we found out...

Despite popular belief, Ted Baker’s founder and CEO is not actually called Ted Baker but Ray Kelvin. Kelvin opened up his first shop in Glasgow in March 1987 before expanding to Manchester, Nottingham and then eventually to London in 1990 where he then expanded his range into women's clothing too.

Originally, Ted Baker was launched as a shirt specialist so whilst in Glasgow, it became the place to buy some of the very best contemporary and stylish men’s shirts around. It’s no secret that even right from the beginning, Kelvin had a very clear view focus and attention to detail on what he wanted to create for the Ted Baker brand. He wanted to carry his sense of humour down to the brand’s persona; so much so, that the first Ted Baker stores around used to provide a dry cleaning service for each shirt bought. Because of this and several other unique little quirks, the brand adopted the title of ‘No Ordinary Designer Label’.

The Ted Baker brand has worked super hard over the years to create their brand persona that they claim to weave through every item of clothing and accessory sold. However, very unusually, they choose not to advertise in the traditional sense but prefer working through PR strategies that work primarily through word of mouth. This is what they believe has kept them so unique and true to their original brand identity from the 80s. By keeping their advertising techniques the pretty much the same, they hope to preserve the brand it just as it is.

However, this isn’t to say that Ted Baker is in any way old fashion or boring… The marketing they do do is innovative, exciting, unusual and works well in the age of social media. They tend to do little stunts like giving away stuffing at Christmas, offering free chocolate at Easter etc. whilst also using engaging and beautiful imagery and content on their social media feeds.

Today, Ted Baker is one of the fastest-growing lifestyle brands in the UK and their collection is still expanding rapidly from its beginnings as a mens’ shirt brand in 1987. We’re lucky enough to have managed to get our hands on some of the vintage Ted Baker items such as these below:
