9 Fashion Trends Started by the Royals that are Popular Today
In the wake of the Royal Wedding aka the wedding of the year, we’ve unsurprisingly turned our fashion attention to the royals.
Although when thinking of fashion trends, one doesn’t tend to jump straight to the British monarchy but actually, there are plenty of fantastic little styles that have been made popular or at least had very popular stints, that have been started by some of our favourite traditionalists.
We’ve pulled together a few of the styles that we think have had a kick start because of the royal who wore it first; so without further ado, let’s begin!
Princess Diana & the Power Shoulders
Queen of the people’s hearts, Diana shook not only the fashion world but the world at large. She was a renowned style icon for many of her outfits, but one of the most famous styles that flaunted was the power shoulder. Gorgeous mum of the royal family’s most recent groom wore numerous suits define by their padded shoulders. Because of this, blazers with padding began to trend worldwide (and are making their way back today!)

The Queen & Colour Blocking
Bright colour blocking is all the rage this spring and summer but good ol’ Liz has been rocking the look for decades. It’s been said that she chooses to wear this bold style so that her doting royal fans are still able to spot her in large crowds (what a babe). We all saw the bright ensemble she flaunted at Harry and Meghan's wedding - a stunning lime Stewart Parvin outfit. Lyst has found that global search terms for ‘bright block colour suits’ has grown by 89% in the last year. You go Queenie!

Meghan Markle and the Power Coat
It’s not just Harry’s mum who could really pull off a power look… His recent wife has also shown that she’s a trendsetter to watch from the the incredible power coats she rocks at their engagements. We’ve all seen how the cream Line the Table coat sold out within 12 hours after she wore it for their engagement shoot. Meghan has in fact created a halo effect of demand for belted and patterned coats worldwide - and is it really any surprise with how gorgeous she makes them all look?

Kate Middleton and… Athleisure?!
We’re not quite talking the Beyonce standard here - slightly more Perfect Moment than Adidas. Kate is a sporty soul with a passion for skiing, sailing and riding which have undoubtedly influenced her athleisure style. Her and Wills are often seen attending sporting events that require such attire which is why she has been able to make it so popular. When she was seen wearing a particular ski jacket in 2017, online search terms for that brand went up 390%!

Princess Margaret and a Tight Waist
Although not a new trend started by one of our favourite princesses, Princess Margaret has always been a fan of the cinched waist look, using belts over both her dresses and coats to create the effect. However, today, we can see the likes of Gigi Hadid using big belts over their coats and tops in order to bring that waist in. Belts in general are making a strong comeback - especially those with a statement buckle!

Queen Alexandra and Chokers
Yes indeed, we’re throwing it way back here but believe it or not, Queen Alexandra supposedly invented the choker necklace! This poor old queen used to have a big scar on neck that she wanted to hide and therefore worse multiple fitted necklaces to hide it. Chokers are a fashion that have gone in and out of the trend spotlight but over the past couple of years have peaked again in popularity. So next time you put your choker on, remember it’s around 170 years old!
Queen Liz and Equestrian
Of course, we’re finishing off with our current monarch again, Queen Elizabeth II. Tight jodhpurs, tweed and knee high riding boots is a style that is particularly associated with Liz and one that has also become a fashion in its own right. Both Chloé and Burberry referenced this equestrian look in the spring/summer collection 2018 with increasing Google searches for tweed blazers and quilted jackets. Whilst this has always been a popular look amongst country goers and a lot of Jack Wills’ ranges, this year seems to be the year of the equestrian!
